First place – Thankless Child, sketch duo Liz Black and Freya Slipper

Second place – Julia Clark, stand up

Third place – Rachel Parris, musical comedy

Variety Award – Gemma Whelan, character act, ’Chastity Butterworth’

Well done to all the other finalists who made this our most innovative and exciting final in eight years and a huge THANKS to Andi Osho for her superb hosting, Miss London for her guest appearance and all our industry judges who helped to make a very difficult choice relatively painless!

Chortle was there to review:

a savvy stand-up who has the sort of knowing, ironic stance of The Inbetweeners, even if such smart-assery has a similar impact on her social life as it does for any of the E4 characters. Her smart set mainly revolves about her trying to see the upside of being single, listing some false positives that she desperately wants to believe make her relationship status alluring. Sharply written with a strong, clear personality, this routine was certainly deserving of second place tonight.

Glitter & Doom

Kent Valentine & Julia Clark will be ruling the evening with an iron fist wrapped in a sordid punchline, so be punctual and nobody will get hurt.

Jokes and music will start at 8pm sharp, but the pub is open for food and drinks before hand, so don’t be afraid to turn up early.

Australian Comedy Review (Groggy Squirrel):
The token female for the show, Julia performed a ten minute set. Her presence was a wonderful contrast the slightly blokey (mainly Chris’ influence) and geeky (Dom’s obvious contributions) material which was to follow. This Londoner presented some expected gear on Australia but it was mostly a bracket of perky yet bitchy and cynical material which had the audience cackling throughout. She played up on the “how could this lovely young lady have such vicious thoughts” angle perfectly.

This was an entertaining hour featuring three solid performers.

RHUM:
With the inclusion of special guest Julia Clark (UK), things started to get going. Clark’s confessional style and endearing observations of post-relationship night-life drew the audience’s attention from where it had been on the chewing gum on the floor to the talent on the stage making us laugh. Clark doesn’t have her own solo show but we are sure to see more of her in the future.

I was also offered a spot in the Best of British showcase at the Exford Hotel.

Australian Stage:
With the energy of a devilish pixie, Julie Clark takes to the stage to relate her experiences as a single Brit adrift in late-night Melbourne. Her well-timed lonely-hearts routine had us groaning with each raunchy punch line. We can enjoy more of her filthy wit in Crossing Over at the Portland Hotel.

The experience of performing regularly for two weeks on top of my full-time day job was as rewarding as it was bloody knackering (I’m trying to remember if it was in the middle of this run that I got dumped… nope, that was the time before).  Gigging every night alongside pro comics, I got a whiff of what it would be like to do this for a living, and I liked what I smelled:  a subtle blend of commitment, stale smoke and a whole heap of funny.

I worked alongside the Founding Mothers of Wicked Women, Kathryn Bendall and Lisa Rathbone, to see this great project develop from a loose gathering of female comics doing stand-up at the Roxbury Hotel to my last show with the group - an all-singing, all-dancing, star-studded extravaganza at the Hornsby RSL, with burlesque dancers, feature acts Amanda Gray, Amelia Jane Hunter and Jackie Loeb, and the inimitable Fiona O’Loughlin as MC. 

I’m not sure why the comics decided to join the very talented burlesque dancers in removing some (not all, lord no!) of their clothes in a distinctly talentless fashion at the end of the night.  I’m pretty sure Fiona had something to do with it.  The general consensus was that it wouldn’t have happened if Kitty Flanagan - our excellent MC at the previous gig – had been in charge.

I look forward to working with all of these ladies of Australian Comedy again in the future.
